In this IEC Global Visions interview, Dr Kazuo Kyuma, Executive Vice President and Group President Semiconductor & Device*, shares how the particular climate and environment of Japan has helped Mitsubishi Electric to build quality products that fit every need and region in the world. He underlines the importance of delivering the right level of quality to achieve customer satisfaction and keep products accessible. Dr Kyuma further outlines how the company's participation in IEC standardization work helps it define the right level of quality, which in turn builds customer trust and corporate success.

Dr Kyuma, you underline the importance of quality and that it is important to build the right product for a given environment. What do you mean by that?

Dr Kyuma: Mitsubishi Electric is always looking to deliver a high level of quality, reliability and safety because this drives customer satisfaction and also helps the company to grow. However, we believe that even though we trade in a global world, we need to take into account and satisfy the needs of our individual customers. For example, some customers live in regions that are very cold: in this case it may not be useful to sell them a product that can withstand high ambient temperatures. Other customers live in hot, dusty or humid climates; in each case they will have different quality expectations that we will need to address. The point is to deliver the truly necessary and best suited product that will perform optimally while remaining affordable. Over-engineering makes as little business sense as under-engineering.

Japan is the best testing ground for our products. We have very cold as well as hot and humid climates. Japan is a museum of natural disasters: our people have consistently been exposed to such disasters as typhoons, and - as you unfortunately saw only recently - earthquakes and tsunamis. This has motivated us to develop, test and manufacture products that can resist such natural disasters and may be one of the reasons why our products are today widely accepted all over the world.

How does Mitsubishi determine the level of quality that is needed for a given application or region?

Dr Kyuma: As you know Mitsubishi Electric manufactures and sells a large variety of products. We believe that quality is the top priority, even before price or on-time delivery. We also understand that quality requirements not only change among product categories, but also from one customer to another. To satisfy these needs optimally, Mitsubishi Electric has developed an efficient way of collaborating between different businesses. Business groups share information, knowledge and technology across departments to identify and satisfy differing needs and this results in the right quality product.

Another element in our strategy is the use of International Standards and the participation in the IEC standard-setting process.

Why does Mitsubishi Electric participate in IEC standard-setting and what would you tell companies that are not yet involved in the IEC?

Dr Kyuma: As a corporation, Mitsubishi needs to grow and succeed in a sustainable way. By complying with International Standards, we are able to build and test products that are reliable and safe, and can be sold worldwide. By participating in the standard-setting process, we are able to contribute to technologies, find new ideas and develop innovative products.

Mitsubishi Electric believes that companies everywhere should participate widely in IEC work. High-level standards take into account global relevance and the best of them are the result of discussions between many people from different companies and backgrounds that bring the right level of expertise and experience to the table.
